Two provisions in the PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) that impact my current nursing practice are 1) the call for increased access to care and 2) the call for more preventive care. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in its Future of Nursing report stated that nurse practitioners should be allowed to practice to the full scope of their education and training (IOM, 2010), which is something they are not permitted to do in every state. Many states require nurses to practice under the supervision of a physician, but as O’Brien (2003) pointed out, Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioners (APRNs) were trained to take the place of the physicians who were leaving the primary care field for specialized medicine. Nurses were trained and educated to be able to provide primary care—the same kind of care that physicians provide. And yet in many states they are not permitted to practice……

The population of the area comprises mostly of African Americans. The community is a low-income area and individuals who live here struggle to make ends meet. This makes it hard for them to access premium health care that is offered at private hospitals. Therefore, most of them have to rely on the community health center. Poor people have been associated with numerous chronic health problems that are as a result of their lifestyles and a lack of viable income. The community is underserved in terms of social amenities. Other structural challenges that are faced by the community is the reduced access to fresh foods, high density of fast food restaurants, and the area is not conducive for physical activity. This makes people have sedentary lifestyles that contribute towards them developing chronic diseases. Access to health care is reduced and the few who are able to access the community……

The American health care system is broken. On this much, almost everybody can agree. Costs are spiralling out of control, health outcomes are among the worst of all developed countries, and nobody can agree on what will make it better. One of the reasons for this disagreement is that different stakeholders fail to agree on what the purpose of the health care system should be. If the purpose is to be a for-profit industry, well, then the industry needs to be set up to earn profits. But the view taken in most parts of the world is that health care serves a greater purpose. Whether this is to provide a high standard of living for people in a country for its own sake, or because healthy populace is better for the economy, such finer points can be debated. Explanation of how healthcare policy can impact the advanced practice nurse profession
The role of APN is to provide primary, specialty, and acute care through assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of those who seek healthcare services. Healthcare policies are meant to improve healthcare services, and thus, they affect the APN profession. However, the specific effect of any policy depends on the specific policy (Taft & Nanna, 2008). For example, one of the policies that affected the APN profession was the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This act, at its core, was to provide healthcare to the marginalized, to those with chronic sicknesses, and at the same time, more healthcare from the hospital in favor of outpatient.

In doing so, the belief was that this would increase access to care and provide nurses with the opportunity to practice as they were trained.
