Annuities account for a great part of the protection one affords self against death. They do not follow the application of the law of large numbers as the law is traditionally utilized in life insurance. It has, therefore, been referred to as “upside-down life insurance.” When an annuitant passes away during the period of accumulation, their beneficiaries are paid a death benefit. The common treatment of annuities is to account for gross premium returns excluding interest or to account for the cash value, whichever is greater. The principle is for the principal sum to be liquidated over the annuitant’s lifetime regardless of the means of accumulation.

Irregular warfare refers to the violent process through which various non-state and state actors fight for influence and legitimacy over populations. While the full might of military power may be employed, irregular warfare generally uses asymmetric and indirect approaches to reduce the power, will, and influence of the adversary. Because of the irregular approaches, such a process is usually very “messy” and the actions during such a war cannot be distilled into a clear definite and repeatable process. The process is usually characterized by terrorism, counterterrorism, insurgency, and counterinsurgency (Department of Defense Washington DC, 2017).
Just like in any organization, the execution of war takes place at various levels from the tactical level to the top strategic level. Corruption takes many forms, and can have a devastating impact on economies, and on the effectiveness of government. For that reason, it is best practice to have a code of ethics for managers who are involved in acquisitions, purchasing and contracts. Ethical lapses contribute to a wide array of issues, including waste, a decline in confidence in the institution of government, and underperformance because the wrong vendors were selected. Larezos (2008) notes that when evidence of corruption arises, governments may need to recompete contracts, projects can be delayed or go way over budget, and there can be increased cost to taxpayers as well. If chronic weak governance leaves a populace disenchanted with government, then the political fallout can be severe as well. In essence, corruption represents the trade-off between the personal gain for the government officials in question versus the overall government or economy.

The Coen Brothers’ (2010) film True Grit is an adaptation of the novel by the same name and contrasts sharply with the films of the same genre from the 1940s and 1950s. Save for John Ford’s Westerns, like The Searchers, which had a bit of realism mixed in with the sentimentality, there is not much comparison worth noting. The Coen Brothers created a film that is true to the book, while the earlier adaptation starring John Wayne romanticizes the relationship between Rooster Cogburn and the young girl who hires him to find the killer of her father. In the Coen Brothers’ film there is no romanticizing of this relationship at all: Cogburn is old and gnarly and the young girl is still a child. Nordau’s analysis of the Jewish psyche is one of victimhood: “Everywhere, where the Jews have settled in comparatively large numbers among the nations, Jewish misery prevails” (Nordau, 1897, p. 1). The Jew is described as being without a home, a land, a nation, a state of his own. Even when he has been emancipated in a country, it has only been by legal terms and not by sentiment: he is still regarded socially as a pariah, an outsider, something foreign to the national body politic. Thus the psyche of the Jew is “Ghetto”—i.e., filled with “shame” and “humiliation” (Nordau, 1897, p. 3). Every Jew is thus psychologically oppressed, downtrodden and crushed and lives in a state of abject misery.
