Public Health Trends and Practices

Resources I will use to remain informed and current in public health trends and practices will be RSS feeds that I can use on sites where public health news is reported, such as sites like Healthcare Global (2017) and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (2017), where news and important trends are published on the Internet as well. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services is an especially helpful site for obtaining up-to-date information on what is happening in the U.S. on the health care front.

Another good source of public health information is the site of the World Health Organization (WHO), along with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). All three of these sites are devoted to publishing useful information on public health trends that can be of particular importance for a professional in the field of nursing. The IOM has published a future of nursing manual that has been helpful to me in the past and the WHO is always good about describing the latest research in terms of global public health issues. The CDC is also likewise good about keeping the public alert on health issues.

I plan to set up feeds for all of these sites so that I can always be abreast of what is happening in the realm of public health and how the latest information and research can be applied to my profession. The Institute of Medicine is particularly helpful in this regard and so too is the World Health Organization and the CDC. I find that all of these agencies play an important role in keeping the public informed on issues, like the opioid epidemic, the obesity epidemic, and the role that preventive care and health literacy can play in keeping communities healthy.
