(a new history of Iraq)

Psychologically, it is very difficult for them to believe that Islamic believers, meaning Arabs in this case have lost wars with the infidels. Islam is the religion of victors and one day, God willing Islam will rule the world is their belief. This is what leads Sheikh Abdul Settar Jabber head of the Muslim Awareness Association; a leading Sunni group to feel that the entire role of the schools should be changed to one that trains students in Islamic law and in how to be good Muslims. (a new history of Iraq) This is the psychological reaction of a child which when frightened hides near its mother and in this case is hiding within its language. The curriculum of Arabs has to reflect what their culture tells them, and religion is a very important part of their culture along with their language.

4. Future for Curriculum Expansion:

Any effort at this is like looking into the future and these predictions cannot be proven on the basis of existing knowledge, or scientifically. The movement of curriculum expansion in America is quite clear. The situation today is that hundreds of community colleges, four-year universities and post graduate programs are now offering different level qualifications and certificates in emergency preparedness, counter-terrorism and security. The main courses of the students may be from political science or psychology or engineering or biotechnology, but they are all preparing for disasters that may happen. The interests in these subjects have certainly jumped up after the attacks of 9/11, but there had been preparations for a long time. One of the programs that are being promoted by the Department of Homeland Security is an 18-month, highly selective professional training effort that is being conducted at the Naval Postgraduate School in California. Here an education is being given to emergency management and public safety officials of high rank about policy analysis, advanced strategy and information technology. (Colleges embrace homeland security curriculum) This is clearly a reaction against a threat that they feel could arise from attacks by fundamentalists. Keeping in view the recent London incidents, this view is not totally unreal.

It is clear that we are coming to a stage where one nation does not trust the other - Iraq and U.S.. Both are trying to be ready for a confrontation and preparing their population for that War. They are all going through educational programs which will make them psychologically comfortable.

This, in a sense, will be a return to the original set-up of education in the United States. Originally, each school district was given the responsibility of implementing the needed educational reforms to meet their individual and unique needs. However, as the nation grew and became less and less agricultural based, the need for a national protocol became necessary. Yet, today our society is less similar than it was before.
