Applying Psychology To Leadership
...Management skills This course provided me with the opportunity for a structured exploration of critical concepts of leadership, specifically what leaders can do to influence their followers in the workplace. The readings provided me with a strong grounding in the key material on workplace motivation, and from there I was able to apply my knowledge of research methods to determine the best way to solve a problem. I think that overall this was a highly valuable course for me, one that will give me the tools to be a better leader for a long time to come.
The capstone project ties together what I have learned about motivation, and how leaders can influence motivation, into a project that will add value to the overall study of workplace motivation. Huntington’s disease is one of many neurodegenerative diseases, which has chorea as one of its prevalent symptoms (Hergert, Sanchez-Ramos, & Cimino, 2019, p.1) . Discovered in the late 1800s’ by George Huntington, a young American medical doctor at the time, the disease has gathered interest from the medical community—but with little in the way of a cure. The disease is highly hereditary, with a 50% chance of transference from parent to offspring (Boyle, Frölander & Manley, 2008, p.333; Roos, 2010, p.6). This hereditary property (of this disease) is due to it being a genetic disorder, which is activated in those that exhibit its symptoms. Primarily, every person has the gene that causes Huntington’s disease, and the activation is equally likely in both biological classifications of human gender (Male and Female); however, those that activate its activity have the expanded version of the gene. The patient is a Caucasian female that is 29 years old. She presented the symptoms and signs of a mental health condition. Apart from having sleepless nights, she stated that she often felt sad, had crying spells almost daily, and that she was overeating. She stated that her sleeping was not right in the sense that it took her a couple of hours before finally falling a sleep. She also added that during certain nights, falling a sleep was impossible and if it happened, she would only sleep for few hours. My Personal Model: Transformational Leadership
My own personal model of leadership is transformational leadership. This model focuses on giving following a vision of what they should work to become. The transformational leader identifies and explains the goal that the organization is trying to reach and how workers can help the organization to achieve that goal. It typically requires a change in the behavior and approaches of the workers, so logic and reason are used to show why this change is needed, which is a way of helping to break down resistance to the change (Nawaz & Khan, 2016). Communication is a key skill used in this model, and transformational leaders have to be able to relate well with followers, provide support along the way, and keep them focused on the vision and the mission.
