Why Did The Union Win The Civil War

There were several factors that led to a Union victory in the Civil War. One of the most important ones was Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. This not only liberated all slaves in Confederate held states so long as they agreed to fight for the Union, it also made slavery one of the primary issues of the war from that point on. This was especially important for the South’s hope of foreign assistance from England. England had already banned slavery and so now that Lincoln had made slavery the main issue of the war through his Proclamation, England could not very well lend support to the South—because then it would essentially be lending support to slavery.
Another vital factor in the Union Victory was Gen. Grant’s military leadership in the war. Grant succeeded where other Union generals had failed. McClellan for instance had been a big bust for Lincoln, often……

Harpers Ferry Raid

The issue of abolitionism came to a head with John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859. Brown’s intention was to instigate an armed slave rebellion (Horwitz). Brown and nearly two dozen other men took over a U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry in Virginia—but instead of achieving the goal of a slave revolt, the men were caught in a stand-off with U.S. Marines from October 16th to the 18th. Robert E. Lee, ironically, was the commander in charge of retaking the arsenal; Lee would be the commander of the Southern Army just a year and a half later. Other future Confederates assisting in the recapturing of Harpers Ferry from the insurrectionist Brown and his men were Stonewall Jackson and J. E. B. Stuart (Horwitz). This paper will discuss the raid, explain what happened and why, and what the fallout was.

Economics And Religion Of Colonies

Both religion and economics were strong forces in the colonization of the New World. Pennsylvania was founded, for instance, because the Quakers were undesirables in England and the King owed a debt to William Penn’s father—so he gave the land in the New World to Penn and the Quakers found a new home for themselves (Fantel, 1974). The Puritans in New England had a similar story to tell. However, economics was also a big factor not just in the colonization of the New World but also in the founding of the nation. The colonies were companies—the Virginia Company, for instance—and they were meant to be productive in trade. Tobacco and other cash crops were very important elements of the colonies in the New World, so it was not all about religion—economics also played a big part.

Julia Jacobs’ article in the New York Times entitled “Dancer Tries to Quell ‘West Side Story’ Controversy: ‘I Am Not a Victim’” raises interesting questions in the #MeToo era, namely who can and should define what constitutes a victim of sexual assault. A controversy arose in the casting of the actor Amar Ramasar the Broadway revival of West Side Story, due to the fact that Ramasar had been found to have shared nude photos of his girlfriend, the ballet dancer Alexa Maxwell, in a punitive act after the couple had separated. Maxwell stated that she had forgiven her former boyfriend, and had even felt pressured to prosecute him after a prominent attorney in the #MeToo movement had contacted her about the toxic culture at City Ballet, where both Ramasar and Maxwell had danced. Maxwell opposed Ramasar’s firing from the play.

Washington Irving’s short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” tells the story of the self-important, intellectual schoolmaster Ichabod Crane who wants to marry Katrina Van Tassel, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy farmer. Crane is nervous and superstitious and during a party he is regaled of stories of the mysterious headless horsemen who haunts the roads at night. His rival is Abraham “Brom Bones” Van Brunt, who is known for playing pranks. Crane meets with a rider who apparently has no head, and who then throws his pumpkin head at Crane. Crane is never seen from again, and is not missed very much, since he was always an outsider and not liked by the insular town of Sleepy Hollow. ...American Watching the video, I felt that I was seeing how real people responded to the Ferguson case and other cases of oppression and injustice—and it was different than just reading these people’s tweets on Twitter or looking at their profiles on social media. It was like seeing the real person behind the digital veneer and I realized that these protestors and the people in the Black Lives Matter are real people, with real feelings. I could hear the emotion in their voices and that made a lot of difference to me. When these members of Black Lives Matter are reading their tweets that they put out in response to the harassment and killings of blacks by white officers, I could see and feel the pain and anger that these people were going through—it was actually quite powerful to see them reading their tweets in the video.
