VA Hospital

Write about the culture and diversity. Describe the population/individuals in the VA hospital work environment. Refer to at least four of the characteristics (such as cultural imposition, economically, cultural awareness, ethnocentric and acculturation). Then, discuss which ones have the most potential for conflict and why?

The VA serves veterans from various backgrounds. The most notable include: Caucasians, African-Americans, Asians, Latinos and American Indians. The four characteristics that will have an impact on the VA include: economically, cultural awareness, ethnocentric and cultural imposition. ("VA Mental Health," 2011)

Economically, the VA is facing challenges with the total number of patients increasing to 2.06 million last year. This is adding to their case loads and overwhelming the resources of many facilities. In the future, this can create conflict with veterans not receiving the quality of care they deserve. Cultural awareness is understanding, the needs of various demographics of patients and what is important to them. This is challenging, with the VA following standard practices when interacting with them. Over the course of time, this will create animosity with some feeling alienated. ("VA Mental Health," 2011)

Ethnocentricity is the take or leave it attitude from staff members. This makes patients feel as if they are just another number. These frustrations will results in conflicts between personnel and patients. Cultural imposition is when the client feels as if the VA has no understanding or respect for their traditions and customs. This is problematic, as the bureaucratic environment enables these attitudes to become more extreme. ("VA Mental Health," 2011)

Discuss the need for multicultural competencies as a standard of care in healthcare facilities. What steps has VA Hospital organization taken to teach multicultural competency to employees?
