The focus of my dissertation is toward the aged American population, particularly the elderly veterans. I will be considering the type and quality of care they receive for the remainder of their old age. Currently, there are programs and health services targeted toward that group. I am interested in the approaches and activities of such programs and other similar programs that might need to be implemented through congressional deliberation and approval. Gerontology is receiving significant attention from researchers in the American space due to the steady incline of the aged American population.
Through the evaluation of certain tendencies within the group of elderly veterans, intervention measures can be provided. Known risk-factors within this group include mental illnesses and war-related disabilities/amputations, which are potential triggers for suicidal behavior/tendency with increasing age (Reid, 2018). Age is an important aspect of cultural diversity that often goes ignored. For that reason ageism is a particularly problematic issue. Racism and sexism are often reported on but prejudice against the elderly is not so commonly touched upon in society. For example, the current presidential candidate Joe Biden is often mocked on social media by people engaging in ageist behavior, attacking him for being senile and having dementia because he stutters or stumbles in his speech or train of thought while campaigning. What people do not realize is that they would likely not fare any better were they to hit the campaign trail and have to give numerous speeches. At any point in time but especially during periods of social and political unrest, American citizens look to law enforcement authorities to provide them with the informed guidance and support they need to navigate their ways through these challenging times successfully. It is therefore incumbent upon law enforcement agencies at every level to create an organizational culture that places a high priority of ethical policing practices and to develop ethical leaders that can model the way for their subordinates. To this end, the purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the relevant literature to explicate the importance of ethical leadership and to identify strategies for developing ethical leaders in law enforcement today. A summary of the research and key findings concerning these issues are presented in the paper’s conclusion.
