Introduction
Having a personal philosophy of nursing important because it provides the nurse with an understanding of the framework that will be applied in the nurse’s own career of … caring for patients. Personal understanding is the bedrock of growth and development. So it is appropriate to stop and consider how one’s own philosophy of nursing with one’s view of the nursing metaparadigm. This paper will identify the factors that have influenced my development of my personal nursing philosophy. It will also discuss my thoughts regarding the nursing metaparadigm. Finally, it will examine the nursing theory that is most compatible with my personal philosophy.

Today, the right of adults to refuse medical treatment when they feel it is not in their best interests is universally acknowledged, and physician-assisted suicide is even legal in nine states and the District of Columbia (Physician-assisted suicide, 2019). A growing number of health care providers are also maintaining that the right to refuse medical care extends to young people as well, but this issue is particularly contentious because the vast majority of adults in the United States believe that children need and deserve special protections that preclude end-of-life decisions. Drawing on a virtue theoretical framework, the purpose of this paper is to examine the arguments in support of and against allow minors to make end-of-life decisions for themselves, followed by a summary of the research and important findings concerning this issue in the conclusion.

When a family has to decide how much is too much, as Plakovic (2016) puts it during end-of-life care, there is a clear ethical dilemma that crops up for family members and care providers. That dilemma is related to the issue of how to approach end-of-life treatment. For instance, some individual have strict preferences when it comes to whether or not they want to be resuscitated or kept alive by a machine. Others have no instructions set aside before hand for care providers and family to go by. The ethical dilemma is complicated by the fact that care providers have an oath to care for all life—but at the end-of-the-life, what is the line between postponing the inevitable inhumanely and giving as much humane care as is possible?
