The Caribbean nations of Haiti, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico share in common a history of tumultuous colonial rule. Yet different Old World colonial governments had presided over each of these countries, leading to completely different languages, cultures, customs, and institutions. The French left the most lingering legacy on Haiti, and Haitian slaves ended up leading the world’s first successful large-scale slave rebellion. British rule in Jamaica would also eventually dissolve, as slavery became an untenable model for the global labor market. Spanish-ruled Puerto Rico likewise capitalized on the slave trade and the free labor extracted from it, but slavery in Puerto Rico was less linked to race as it was in either Haiti or Jamaica. This is not to say that Puerto Rico is not as marred by slavery as were Jamaica or Haiti, but the colonial system did ensure a lingering social stratification based on class status. This……

With about half of all high school students admitting to have already had sex, and only 60% of those students claiming they used a condom, sexual education can be considered a public health imperative (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2019). Unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases are the most important health-related reasons to teach sexual education in public schools. Research has shown that “when sex education is comprehensive, students feel more informed, make safer choices and have healthier outcomes — resulting in fewer unplanned pregnancies and more protection against sexually transmitted diseases and infection,” (“America’s Sex Education: How We Are Failing Our Students,” 2017, p. 1). Children will seek out and find information related to sex outside the classroom, such as on the Internet, opening them up to potentially poor sources of information. Netflix’s income statement showcases a company with rapidly growing revenues. In FY17, the company earned revenues of $11.7 billion, and this grew to $15.8 billion in 2018 and $20.1 billion in FY19. The company was only marginally profitable in 2016, but its profits have grown to nearly $1.9 billion in FY19. Again, this is strong growth, and would be viewed quite positively by investors. Indeed, the company’s earnings per share have grown from $1.25 to $4.13 over the past three years, a strongly positive trend.
In some cases, rapid growth comes on the back of steep increases in infrastructure costs, but Netflix has also seen a sharp increase in profits, and this is reflected on the company’s balance sheet.
