Ms. Ranyevskaya’s behavior in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard is replete with sentimentality, distraction, and nostalgia. However, lurking beneath her obvious mistakes and foolish dreams is a serious trauma—i.e., the drowning death of her seven year old son and the loss of her husband—leaving her a motherless widow. It is the unexpected entrance of death into her life that could be used to explain or at least indicate the presence of psychological trauma in Ms. Ranyevskaya’s character. It is Anya who tells of these misfortunes: “Father died six years ago, and a month later our little brother, Grisha, drowned. Sweet boy, he was only seven. And Mama couldn’t face it, that’s why she went away, just went away and never looked back” (Chekhov 816). This paper addresses the significance of ethnic or cultural identity. It deals with the identity of socially advantaged as well as disadvantaged groups and my relation to them. Additionally, it highlights the significance of the self-identity concept. The Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity (MMRI), put forward by Smith, Sellers, Shelton and colleagues (1998), has been utilized to address all of the above aspects. Experiential Family Therapy

Experiential family counseling focuses on role playing and other multisensory techniques, allowing members of the family to step into the shoes of one another through role play exercises to better understand one another, develop empathy and work out issues together (Tuttle, 1998). This paper will identify leading figures in experiential family counseling, historical and current events, assumptions, development of the theory, concepts, and techniques that relate to my own approach to counseling. Similarities and dissimilarities between the experiential family counseling and other leading theories will be explored and the paper will conclude with a discussion of what new knowledge I acquired.

The Coen Brothers True Grit

The Coen Brothers’ (2010) film True Grit is an adaptation of the novel by the same name and contrasts sharply with the films of the same genre from the 1940s and 1950s. Save for John Ford’s Westerns, like The Searchers, which had a bit of realism mixed in with the sentimentality, there is not much comparison worth noting. The Coen Brothers created a film that is true to the book, while the earlier adaptation starring John Wayne romanticizes the relationship between Rooster Cogburn and the young girl who hires him to find the killer of her father. In the Coen Brothers’ film there is no romanticizing of this relationship at all: Cogburn is old and gnarly and the young girl is still a child.
