Apart from what an individual does for a living, which usually takes up only about 8 hours a day, he also finds time to do some other work. This is really what he often wants to do, but since this job does not get him enough money for a living, he usually takes it up as a part time activity in which he has a lot of interest. Naturally due to his own personal interest, he also develops a lot of knowledge about the matter.

Having a hobby is something which humans have been associated with for a long time and thus it can be seen in many areas related to humans. Let us look at some of them, as there may be other hobbies also that are not listed here. Some hobbies are animal-related and can be further broken down into beekeeping, dog breeding, herpeto-culture, animal fancy meaning having pet or show animals, keeping horses and animal rescue which may be for injured or orphaned wild or domestic animals. Another range of hobbies are regarding arts and crafts and these may be broken down into blacksmithing, crochet, dollhouses, doll making, drawing, embroidery, enamels, knitting, miniature figures, painting, figure painting, tole painting, pottery, quilting, maintaining scrapbooks, sculpture, sewing, stained glass keeping, stamping, warm glass keeping, weaving, wood carving and woodworking. The hobby may be one of simple collections of antiques, works of art, autographs, books, classic videogames, coins, collection of fossils, comic books, currency, driving dumpsters, collecting enamels, microchips, match box labels, postcards, records, rocks and minerals, scale models, shopping lists, stamps, trading cards like baseball cards, wine labels or shot glasses. Some hobbies are computer related and may be collection of 3D computer graphics designs, animation designs, computer games, computer programming in the open source and free software movement, collection of operating systems like GNU and Linux, or retro-computing. Even cooking and doing home repairs at home may be a hobby.

Hobbies in electronics may be hardware hacking, preparing of amateur radios and CB radios or preparation of robots. Making of films may be a hobby. Playing of different games with cards like chess, go, pente, tournament scrabble; or card games like bridge, poker, backgammon or gin rummy; or games like dominoes, war gaming sometimes with miniatures may be hobbies. Even human games of role playing or flirting may be hobbies. There are internet-based hobbies like searching Wikipedia, or Google; participating in newsgroups, tracking of currency bills, exchanging of books, GPS drawing or geocaching which is modern day form of treasure hunting are hobbies. There are many hobbies in the area of sports like baseball, softball, rounder, bowling, cycling, dancing, fantasy sports, fresh and salt water fishing including fly fishing, gliding, hunting, martial arts, sailing, shooting of rifles or pistols or shotguns, table tennis or even Frisbees may be a hobby. Building of different types of models may be hobbies and that includes matchstick models, military models, both civil and military aircraft models, models of cars including radio-controlled cars, model commercial vehicles, houses, figures of historical and military importance, model of nations, models of railroads and railways, rockets, ships and even scenes used for movies and Pop shows. Literary hobbies include reading, writing, learning foreign languages and even constructed languages.
