Another writer notes, "Conservatives, Wooldridge explained, have most of the new ideas for public policy, and the momentum. This does not necessarily translate into winning an election, he said, but it does mean that the conservative voice will be heard regardless of who is in office" (Haines). This again indicates that conservatism in America is much more than simple politics. It covers the spectrum from the economy to social policies, and ultimately colors the way we live, work, and play in America today. Liberalism, on the other hand, is far more geared to governmental reform and support, which is directly opposed to the conservative belief in small government and personal responsibility.
In conclusion, conservatism in America takes many forms and ideals and blends them together to create social, political, and religious thought and action. Most conservatives do hold one tenet above all others, and that is personal liberty and responsibility. Born out of conservative roots, America may be a successful and powerful world government, with many liberal ideas and policies, but underneath it all, much of America conforms to conservative values and ideals - ideals that came to this country with the first British colonists, and have grown and flourished throughout American history.

American Political Culture and Values In Hellfire Nation (2003) James Morone described U.S. history as cyclical, with alternating generational cycles of reform and conservatism that can be traced back to the colonial period. In the 20th Century, the reform periods were the Progressive Era, the New Deal and the Great Society of the 1960s, while the 1920s, 1950s and 1980s were eras of conservatism. Religion, culture and sexual morality also follow

The conservative objection to stem cell research are predicated in the rigid and unquestioning adherence to religious values that may once have represented tenable ideas, but that are patently ridiculous in the light of modern scientific understanding of human biology and genetics. As a result, at least eight years of tremendously valuable medical research has been irretrievably lost to federal regulations that prohibited federal funding to the most important applications

Conservatism The Strengths and Weaknesses of Conservatism Conservatism has existed since long before it acquired its modern title. Essentially, the underlying principle of conservatism is that the populace should be ruled by an elite governing body that holds a superior grasp

Political Science The Republican Party triumphed a majority in both houses of the Congress in the fall of 1994. This was the first time since the 1952 landslide of Eisenhower. It was believed by many that the Republicans had achieved the partisan realignment in the end. It also came to be believed that the prophesied Republican majority by Kevin Phillips in the late 1960s had come to reality. The Republicans under the
