When new sports are introduced to the global market, they are frequently met with disdain, ridicule, or mistrust. Even when those sports become popular, stalwarts of the old guard cling to their notion of what differentiates a “real” sport from a “mere” game or hobby. Some sports that are now entrenched in the Olympic games, such as snowboarding, were once derided. On the other hand, many sports that have been mainstays in the Olympics still do not meet all the typical definitions of what constitutes a sport. Synchronized swimming and rhythmic gymnastics are physically challenging but are not sports in the way that rugby or soccer are. Yet the latter two are not included in the Olympics and the former two are. The most recent sport to command a considerable amount of media attention and controversy regarding its status is gaming—or eSports. eSports have taken the world by storm……

Depression is a significant social issue of interest to me as I have seen it affect numerous people in my own life and have even struggled with it at times myself. Depression has caused people to take their lives: Chester Bennington, lead singer of the group Linkin Park took his life following the suicide of his friend, and numerous other people who are less famous end up in similar situations—lost, without hope, unable to break a cycle of depression that has them gripped as though in a vice. Depression is an issue that can be treated, however, but in order for the right intervention to be applied, awareness about depression has to be raised so that the stigma and taboo of depression can be alleviated, allowing those who suffer from it to come forward. Introduction
Foster children are more likely than children in the general population to have mental health issues (Polihronakis, 2008). Part of the reason for this is that foster children are in foster care because they have been neglected in their own homes, their parents are incapable of providing food, love, shelter and nourishment, and they are in need of a nurturing environment. Many of them will have experienced a traumatic event, or the transition from one home to another will be traumatic—and so they end up suffering from mental health problems. It is estimated that approximately 8 out of every 10 children in foster care have mental health issues, as opposed to 2 out of 10 children in the rest of the population (NCSL, 2019). Martin Luther King, Jr., likened himself to the “prophets of the eighth century” in his letter from a Birmingham Jail (King, 1963). Since Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), which institutionalized the separate but equal clause, the South had been plagued by Jim Crow, and blacks were being treated unfairly. King had arrived in Birmingham to protest the injustices there. Some of his fellow clergymen objected to his protests, arguing that he was disrupting the peace and that it was un-Christian of him to insert himself into matters that did not pertain to him. President Lincoln stated in his Second Inaugural that the U.S., now whole again, should work “to bind up the nation’s wounds”—but with his assassination, and the voice of America’s better angels now gone, Reconstruction got off to a rockier start than the deceased president would have hoped to have seen. Reconstruction was supposed to be a new dawn of brotherhood; the South was to be forgiven, and blacks were supposed to be equal. What had been razed to the ground during Sherman’s March to the Sea was now to be rebuilt so that order could be re-established. Frederick Douglass, writing in The Atlantic in 1866, stated that enfranchisement of the free black would only come if the federal government passed laws to protect the newly freed former slaves and brought the law of the North into the South. ...Race Watching the video, I felt that I was seeing how real people responded to the Ferguson case and other cases of oppression and injustice—and it was different than just reading these people’s tweets on Twitter or looking at their profiles on social media. It was like seeing the real person behind the digital veneer and I realized that these protestors and the people in the Black Lives Matter are real people, with real feelings. I could hear the emotion in their voices and that made a lot of difference to me. When these members of Black Lives Matter are reading their tweets that they put out in response to the harassment and killings of blacks by white officers, I could see and feel the pain and anger that these people were going through—it was actually quite powerful to see them reading their tweets in the video. Qualitative researchers have a number of different research strategies available to them, including case studies, phenomenology, grounded theory and ethnography. Each of these research strategies has its respective strengths and weaknesses, but ethnography in particular represents a special challenge since it seeks to learn more about a group of people from the perspective of an insider. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the relevant literature to identify and describe and benefits of ethnographical research as a strategy for developing a better understanding concerning the lived experiences of others. A critique of Dr. Loïc Wacquant’s ethnographical work and a discussion concerning its implications for social change are followed by a description concerning the potential impact of research in supporting positive social change through public policy in the paper’s conclusion.
