This paper describes and discusses schizophrenia. It looks at the disorder from the standpoint of history, etiology, treatment, prevention, culture and the Bible to explore its many facets. It shows that in spite of there being no known cause of the disorder, treating it is possible. It highlights the need to reduce the taboo and stigma associate with schizophrenia as a step in preventing it or at least in treating it before it worsens. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic and possible genetically inherited disease that affects lungs. It is characterized by buildup of thick and stick mucus that is had to cough out of the lungs. With the accumulation of the thick and sticky mucus, it can result to difficulty in breathing and can lead to other complications including lung infections, liver disease, and diabetes[endnoteRef:1]. CF has also been shown to cause digestive problems and ultimately malnutrition through interference with pancreatic functioning and preventing enzymes which are involved in the breaking down of food. In male, the thick mucus has also been attributed to infertility by blocking the vas deferens. Two provisions in the PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) that impact my current nursing practice are 1) the call for increased access to care and 2) the call for more preventive care. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in its Future of Nursing report stated that nurse practitioners should be allowed to practice to the full scope of their education and training (IOM, 2010), which is something they are not permitted to do in every state. Many states require nurses to practice under the supervision of a physician, but as O’Brien (2003) pointed out, Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioners (APRNs) were trained to take the place of the physicians who were leaving the primary care field for specialized medicine.
