Depression is a significant social issue of interest to me as I have seen it affect numerous people in my own life and have even struggled with it at times myself. Depression has caused people to take their lives: Chester Bennington, lead singer of the group Linkin Park took his life following the suicide of his friend, and numerous other people who are less famous end up in similar situations—lost, without hope, unable to break a cycle of depression that has them gripped as though in a vice. Depression is an issue that can be treated, however, but in order for the right intervention to be applied, awareness about depression has to be raised so that the stigma and taboo of depression can be alleviated, allowing those who suffer from it to come forward. ...Business studies Toyota’s JIT (just in time) manufacturing system keeps inventory at a minimum and is committed to avoiding overproduction. Only what is needed, when it is needed, is provided. “Overproduction may create excessive lead times, result in high storage costs and make it difficult to detect defects” (Harris, 2007, par.3). Whenever something is produced that is unneeded, that is a waste of both time and money. Waste also means the waste of storage space needed to keep inventory clean and in climate-controlled conditions. Waste also means that products which could have been valuable could have taken up the devoted time and money to the unneeded products instead.
But to operate a JIT system requires close relationships with suppliers. Suppliers must be trusted to be able to supply the raw materials in small quantities, as quickly as possible, when there is a spike in demand. A JIT system also requires highly trained……

Big Splash
Making a big splash to establish a new policy has its risks, but this approach can be advantageous as well. The current situation is that there are only a few volunteers working with the organization regularly and they are facing burnout. So there is a problem that may break soon, and threaten the ability of the organization to do its work. The training seminars are going to be a barrier for those who are already working to continue, and a further barrier to attracting new people to do this work. There is no particular evidence that the seminars are going to solve any problem at all, so I would treat them with some skepticism. This is especially true in that 75% of volunteers are one-offs, and the number of one-offs might drop to near zero if they have to attend the seminars before volunteering.

Schreiber and Young’s (2015) “Illinois Releases Pregnancy Accommodation Proposed Rules” and Smith and Tischler’s (2014) “Accommodations under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act” both examine workplace rules regarding pregnancy for workers. Smith and Tischler look at some of the problems associated with the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) and the challenges that employers runs into when attempting to follow it while also staying compliant with Equal Opportunity laws. Schreiber and Young look at rules proposed by the state of Illinois regarding pregnancy discrimination in the workplace. This paper will compare and contrast the two to find where similarities and differences exist.
