Project Management

The baggage handling system (BHS) project is in motion. Initially, our company Boeing Airport Equipment Automated Systems, Inc. (BAE) stipulated that no change requests should be accepted. However, it is proving impossible to ignore the influx of change requests from major stakeholders, namely the airlines.

As project manager, I have determined that our policy regarding change requests should itself be changed, from a public relations standpoint. We cannot risk further isolating core stakeholders, for risk that the entire project fall apart later due to technical, design, conceptual, or implementation flaws that might arise. It is my duty as project manager to attend to the change requests, and I believe that BAE could learn a great deal from reading and responding to those requests. We shall do so in a systematic and organized manner.

Challenges

Change requests might interfere with our workflow. "Each requested change and recommended action must be processed through the integrated change control process. The approved changes have their effects on the project management plan, and therefore the plan needs to be updated accordingly," ("Part IV: Monitoring and Controlling the Project," n.d., p. 310).

2. Costs incurred could be significant. The recommended corrective actions, preventive actions, and defect repairs could highlight flaws in our planning.

Project Management Solutions

1. Maximize use of information technology designed specifically for our project. We are using a proprietary project management software that was designed specifically for BAE. I have ascertained that we are under-utilizing this software, especially as we have previously rejected the change requests from the airlines. When we input the airlines' change requests into the software system, those requests will be far less daunting than they appear on the surface.
