Visitors to the site
There were few casual visitors to the site, which is of no special interest to tourists. However, there were a few onlookers who observed the site from safe points established by the contractor. Besides students, there were visiting members of the contractor team such as off-site supervisors, engineers, and other supervisors. Day laborers comprised the bulk of the people entering the construction areas. DeMatteis/Turner is the contracting company, and they maintain strict safety standards. Because of the historic and high visibility of their work, the company is careful to ensure visitor safety, and make all feel welcome. The project has as much transparency as possible for one of this scale and scope.
Tests/Inspections
One of the most important inspections performed on the construction site was related to fire and emergency safety. The fire department (FDNY) repeatedly visits the site to ensure that engineering and architectural specs meet city safety standards for emergency evacuations. Because of the scale of the project, and the number of residents expected, it is important to maintain as many exit corridors as possible. The on-site project manager explained some of the other safety and quality inspections that are carried out regularly, especially those on concrete integrity and electrical wiring. The chief architect comes once per month to ensure design specifications are being met. The project is nearing the phase where interior designers will also be coming more frequently, the supervisor noted.

Hot Work Activities: (Hot Work Supervisor) ? )
Time Activity Fire Watch Personnel for Activity
Noon welding One
Some welding was taking place on the last remaining exposed steel frame, but our group was too far from this spot to observe the activity. The welder had a fire watch personnel observing, and the supervisor ensured us that safety protocol was being followed.
Accidents, Injuries, or Unusual Events
Accidents and injuries are prevented via safety standards such as always wearing a hard hat in the construction area. There have been no severe injuries during the current project. Minor injuries are attended to in a medical tent. The only unusual event happened during the first phase of the project, when one of the scaffolds was unstable and partly collapsed but no one was injured.
Progress of Work
Key Activities and Material Deliveries
The project has been divided into five phrases, and is currently near the end of Phase III.
Most material deliveries take place early in the morning, but may occur at any time when materials are required.
Electrical wiring is still being installed, and there remains some work to do in this area.
Scaffolding is almost all in place, and is becoming unnecessary in some areas that are ready for finishing.
The most important activities remaining are focused on design and aesthetics. The structure of the project is nearly in place. Final elements, especially interior elements, need to be introduced. Windows need to be installed. Stairs are not yet complete.
Items Accomplished
The frame of the building is almost fully intact and stable, with metal, concrete, and wood elements in place.
Electrical wiring is almost finished, and good progress has been made.
Meetings and Significant Decisions
Meetings will be taking place with increased frequency as the project nears completion. The contractors will be working with a…
