Information technology allows virtual meetings to take place even when departments are thousands of miles away, and it allows communication and data to stream even when the business is closed and management has gone home for the day.

However, in other ways, information technology has not made managers more effective and efficient. With the proliferation of technology available today, from laptops to Blackberries and beyond, management is never really "away" from the corporation. They are literally hooked up 24 hours a day, seven days a week, leading to stress, long hours, and inefficiency as they make snap decisions on a cell phone while they are shuttling kids to soccer games.
