DNP 8000: Health Systems Development and Leadership Practice Immersion Experience - Self-AssessmentMy experience with the DNP 8000 course has been enlightening to say the least; for me personally I feel that I have been given a solid understanding of health systems development and what leadership must look like within the nursing profession. I feel much more confident on my path forward than I did at the beginning of the courseand that is always a good sign that the course was effective. With this paper, I will reflect on the Course Level Student Learning Outcomes, some of the End-of-Program Outcomes, and the Leadership Role-Specific Competencies that I acquired as a result of this course.Self-AssessmentThe DNP 8000 course has been an enormous help in my mission to my grow my skills, my knowledge, and my ability to bring theory and practice together in my real-world nursing experience. The DNP essentials, moreover, have been an excellent guide with respect to focusing on the nurse executive role-specific competencies that have been the backbone of my learning experience. Some areas of this course that stand out as particularly relevant for me include the following.Course Readings and Discussion ThreadsThe readings for me are what provided the framework for my experience: they were like the welcome guideand I was the visitor. They introduced me to the goals and showed me around, and I felt like I was able to get a good understanding of where I was to be going thanks to them. They often gave me a strong theoretical foundation that I could stand upon to make sense of real-world issues in nursing, and all the different discussion threads helped me compare my experiences with others and brought all of our real-world experiences into a fuller perspective (thanks to the application of theory). For example, I recall having a discussion on patient-centered care in a multicultural setting, which made me realize the importance of cultural competence, and this aligned with DNP Essential II: Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement and Systems Thinking (Giardino & Hickey, 2020). It was a flashing ah-ha moment for mewherein everything seemed to click and fall into place. What we were learning and experiencing was not compartmentalized and tucked away each into its own silo; rather, it was all together, everything feeding into everything.Leadership Shadowing ExperienceI also gained a lot of good insight from shadowing experienced nurse leaders in the field. There is just something about observing a nurse leader and getting able to work in the field alongside that leader at the same time that really resonated with me. It gave me hands-on experience while also served as a kind of mentor opportunity: I was there working in the field but was also supported by a leader at the same time. That is the type of experience I am most thankful for. I could see first-hand great examples of the importance of effective communication and collaboration, and examples that reflected the Leadership Role-Specific Competency on conflict resolution and negotiation (Beasley & Ard, 2021).Collaboration with Mentors and ProfessorsOf course, I also had my mentors and professors in the classroom setting as well. My interactions with my mentor and professor were always informative and enlightening. The feedback I received on my course work was great and helped me focus specifically on how to bring evidence-based practice into my viewpoints. This experience really brought home to me the meaning of DNP Essential III:…

…of the values, ethics, and responsibilities that come with being a nurse.ConclusionMy experience in the DNP 8000 course and the subsequent collaboration with the DNP Practicum Project team mentor has been enormously helpful. The course has given me a solid foundation in health systems development and leadership, and has shown the importance of being able to bring theoretical knowledge into practical experiences. The discussion threads, leadership shadowing, and interactions with mentors and professorsall of it also enriched and supported this learning experience, so that by the end of it I felt I had a holistic understanding of the nursing profession's many different facets. In addition, the mentorship I received during the practicum project was, I can easily say, an effective cornerstone for my personal growth as it helped give me confidence in myself. It was also a boon for my academic and professional growth. The mentor's guidance was always insightful and supportive, and it helped me close the gap between theory and real-world application. As a result I could create for myself an environment of learning and improvement that gave me confidence. I used that invaluable feedback, and took advantage of networking opportunities, and thus have come out much further along in my own path than I ever imagined. Overall, I would have to say that the DNP 8000 course and the mentorship experience have been huge in making me into the well-rounded, competent, and informed nursing professional that I aim to be. My experiences in this course have allowed me to hone my skills and deepen my knowledge, and they have given me a greater and deep sense of responsibility as a nursing professional. My path will continue forward, but the lessons I have learned in…
