It is reported by the Inter-American Institute of the Child that nearly 200 million children reside in Mexico and of these, nearly 15 million have no where to live but in the street and six million are stated to be malnourished with seventy percent of the 15 million street children stated to be girls who are victims of violence. There is a rise in violence among families and in society and this is attributed to marginalization of a great percentage of the population with children suffering the most due to the "...violence, exclusion, inequity and social, cultural, economic and political crises, and urged the elaboration of models providing a safety net for the poorest of the poor." (cited in: Rodriguez, 1998, p.1)
The report entitled: "Health Issues in Mexico" states that among males aged 15 to 64 that the three leading identified causes of death in Mexico include deaths by:
(1) homicide;
(2) accidents; and (3) cirrhosis. (nd)
Among females the leading three causes of death are those of:
(1) malignant neoplasms;
(2) heart disease; and (3) diabetes mellitus. (Health Issues in Mexico, nd)
Tuberculosis is frequent in all regions and among all adults in Mexico. Maternal mortality is stated at 9.4 per 10,000 live births however the number is higher but is not registered. Over 43 million individuals live in regions infested with malaria which are the rural environments. The National Health System is comprised by both private and public sector institutions. Diseases in Mexico include those of: (1) cholera; (2) dengue; (3) tuberculosis; and AIDS-HIV. (Health Issues in Mexico, nd)
