SMART Goal 1: Leadership Development

specific- Who is involved in the goal, what is the goal, where will it take place?

In regards to leadership development with the context of nursing leadership, a mentor would need to be approached. Leadership development hinges primarily on the individuals ability to learn and subsequently development needed skills. A mentor is a viable option in which to do so. As such the specific goal, as it relates to leadership development would be to acquire a mentor and meet periodically to discuss skill progression. It will take place within the confines of the hospital, either bi-weekly or monthly. In addition, another specific goal would be to identify personal areas of opportunity monthly and address those areas specifically with the mentor. In addition, the mentee will have specific metrics in which they are evaluated on in regards to leadership development. These metrics may include patient service ratings, or service time. These metrics however should reflect the development and growth of the leader (Locke, 1968).

M: measurable- How are you going to achieve the goal?

To achieve the goal, the individual will first need consistency and commitment both internally and externally. Internally, the individual must commit to periodic meetings and self-assessments. Externally, the mentor must be willing and able to commit time and energy to the development of the mentee. Therefore, to better achieve the goal, schedules will be made in advance of meetings to discuss topics and areas of concern. If alterations are needed in regards to the meeting each party must commit to rescheduling the meeting within the month as oppose to procrastinating. The goal will be at least 2 meetings per month. In addition, the mentee must also attend one personal development seminar bi-monthly.…
