Article Critique 1 – A Phenomenological Study

This article critique analyses the article by Corb, Taggart and Cousins (2015) titled “People with intellectual disability and human science research: A systematic review of phenomenological studies using interviews for data collection”. The researchers, Deirdre, Taggart and Cousins (2015), examined the manner in which people suffering from intellectual disabilities could consent to their participation in a research. The researchers also discuss the methods of information dissemination and the methodology used in that dissemination hence increasing research value. Further, the researchers examine the manner in which Heideggerian phenomenology can be applied on people suffering intellectual disabilities.

This research by Corb, Taggart and Cousins (2015) utilizes a systematic investigation review that utilized phenomenological methods in conducting interviews among intellectually disabled participants. The research entailed 4 electronic data bases. The inclusion criteria utilization occasioned the twenty eight relevant publications. The articles selected were examined and pertinent data derived. The findings were presented through examination of the theory and philosophy that influenced data collection, recruitment methods, thoroughness of analysis of data, link between participants and researchers, and the findings statement. The outcome of the research entailed the important issues that concerned people suffering moderate and mild intellectual disability. Through critical analysis it will be possible to prove that the research had all the characteristics of a phenomenological research approach. The researchers also highlighted the implications of their research to future studies. It is clear that cultivating awareness through research for intellectually disabled people is fundamental and coming up with appropriate measures for disseminating findings in formats that are accessible is fundamental. Corb, Taggart and Cousins (2015) challenge researchers to consider utilizing the Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology method because of its ability to investigate intellectually disabled people’s experiences.

Corb, Taggart and Cousins (2015) succeed in proving that people suffering from intellectual disabilities may not have an ability to benefit from adequate information that helps reflect the experiences they go through (p 453). As a way of ensuring that the voices of the intellectually disabled are heard researchers found it necessary to moderate the research design’s consensual nature while at the same time upholding the research integrity. Researchers replaced words for symbols and pictures to help nonreaders (intellectually disabled) with an ability to understand the content. The researchers read materials for the research participants with a reading ability that is lower than normal. The researchers took time…
