Paul Hindemith was a German composer who made use of neoclassical elements, blending "tonal harmony and distinctively modern elements, notably jazz" in his works (Sadie 2005). While criticized for putting art above political resistance during World War II, others have cited his work's celebration of individuality and spontaneity within form as a way of resistance, despite the overall tonality of his work.

Bela Bartok (1881-1945): String Quartet No.5

The Hungarian Bela Bartok is praised both for his innovations in composition as well as for his work collecting and transcribing folksongs. Bartok used dissonances and propulsive rhythms and worked largely with instrumental music ("Zoltan Zodaly," Sierra Chamber Society Program Notes, 1997). His works "exploit the piano as a percussion instrument, using its resonances as well as its xylophonic hardness and his String Quartet no.5 (1934), was significant in Bartok's work for showing a more diatonic use of harmony ("Bela Bartok," The Music Encyclopedia, 2009).

Jan Koetsier (1911-2006): Brass Quintet, Op.65

Koetsier was born in the Netherlands, but spent much of his life in Germany, where he obtained most of his conducting posts. Was best known as a conductor and teacher of conducting at the Musikhochschule in Munich. Despite a busy conducting career, "he was a prolific composer, producing an opera, ballet and music for orchestra, band, chamber groups and voice" (Herman 2009).
