Mission Command
...Environment What is the Art of Leadership
Mission command is defined in the Army Doctrine Publication 6-0 as “the exercise of authority and direction by the commander using mission orders to enable disciplined initiative within the commander's intent to empower agile and adaptive leaders in the conduct of unified land operations” (McBride & Snell, 2017). The philosophy and concepts of mission command can be found in the six guiding principles of mission command, which are: 1) using mutual trust to build a cohesive team, 2) creating a sense of shared understanding, 3) being clear about what the commander’s intent is, 4) exercising an initiative that is disciplined, 5) using mission orders, and 6) accepting prudent risk (Hutchings, 2018). Thus, one can see that the most important concepts in the philosophy of mission command are trust, communication, understanding, discipline, guidance and prudence. Introduction: Reflection
Public Policy Issue
This policy will mandate that mandatory staffing ratios be met by hospitals throughout the nation. This is an important public policy issue because it would oblige hospitals that are part of the Medicare program to create a committee that is partly made of nurses who can discuss the issue of staffing. As Fowler and Comeaux (2017) point out, staffing is still a major challenge for nurses. If there are too few nurses on staff it can lead to nurse burnout. The right ratio of nurses to patients is required to prevent nurses from being overburdened (Martin, 2015). The reason I selected this policy is because it is clearly important to nurses’ own health and ability to do their jobs. The Wells Fargo Collateral Protection Insurance (CPI) Scandal occurred as a result of the banking firm placing CPI on accounts even though the account holders did not ask for it or want it. It resulted in customers paying unnecessary and higher fees over a period of time. Wells Fargo was sued and agreed to settle the case out of court for approximately $400 million without admitting fault (Top Class Actions, 2019). The scandal, however, caused Wells Fargo to lose a great deal of reputation: customers began leaving the bank in droves and the firm suddenly found itself wondering how it had fallen and what it could do to shore up trust among customers once more. For years, the bank seemed happy to dupe customers with excessive fees, believing no customer would be sophisticated enough to realize just how he was being overcharged—but customers did catch on and……

Stem Cell Transplants Treat Alzheimers And Parkinsons Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia, while Parkinson’s disease is known as a debilitating neurodegenerative disease that affects significantly more men than women. The two disorders have some similar symptoms but are also very different. With regards to treatment, no standard intervention has been developed for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disorder. The only existing drugs are those that address some of the symptoms. Likewise, there is no standard therapy for those with Parkinson’s disease. But lifestyle changes, approved drugs, and surgical operations can be recommended to address symptoms. Nevertheless, stem cell research has shown a lot of promise in helping to restore and regenerate destroyed brain tissues and is, therefore, currently being tested to help treat brain disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. Two provisions in the PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) that impact my current nursing practice are 1) the call for increased access to care and 2) the call for more preventive care. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in its Future of Nursing report stated that nurse practitioners should be allowed to practice to the full scope of their education and training (IOM, 2010), which is something they are not permitted to do in every state. Many states require nurses to practice under the supervision of a physician, but as O’Brien (2003) pointed out, Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioners (APRNs) were trained to take the place of the physicians who were leaving the primary care field for specialized medicine. As Shackelford (2019) notes in “Industry Voices—Healthcare is Changing,” there is a serious need to reach future workforce members at an earlier age, before they enter into college and a nursing program. Students need to start developing real world skills that will translate well to professional development in the healthcare industry—and that means they need to develop communication skills, technological understanding, and have access to intro-level health care courses when they enter high school. Getting students interested in a future healthcare career at the age of 14 or 15 is a great way to prepare the future workforce and provide them with “career-ready” skills, as Shackelford (2019) puts it.
